These Mummy Hot Dogs will be the cutest addition to your Halloween party spread! They’re insanely easy to make, absolutely delicious, and only require 2 ingredients!
I’ve never been good at making cute crafty things…easy recipes are more my style. My daughter is now 3, however, and she’s starting to love all those cute Pinterest-style things, so I figured it was about time to step up my game! Enter: mummy hot dogs. Easy enough for a non-crafty mom like me, but cute enough to impress even the toughest critics (aka 3 year olds 😉 ).Ingredients
- Crescent Dough – use 1 (8 oz) can refrigerated Pillsbury Crescent Recipe Creation Dough Sheet for the best results. It’s exactly like crescent rolls minus the perforations!
- Hot Dogs – use your favorite variety! We actually used cheese dogs, because when I was researching this recipe, I saw a lot of people would wrap cheese around the hot dogs. More often than not, I saw that people had trouble with too much cheese leaking out, so I thought, let’s use cheese dogs instead! Bonus: it’s one less ingredient you need to pick up.
- Candy Eyes – these are totally optional, but they’re SO cute. You can find them on Amazon, Target, or pretty much any craft store.
How to make hot dog mummies
- Cut the dough into strips using a pizza cutter, then wrap each hot dog.
- Place the wrapped dog onto a silicone mat lined baking sheet, then repeat with the remaining cheese dogs.
- Spray each mummy with cooking spray then bake in a 350 degree F oven until the dough is golden brown and cooked through.
- Dunk the back of each candy eye in a bit of ketchup/mustard, then “glue” 2 eyes onto each of the cooked mummy dogs.
How to wrap hot dogs to look like mummies
- Holding the cheese dog in front of you, attach 1 strip of dough at the end and with the dough hanging down, rotate the cheese dog so the dough begins to wind down until it reaches other end lightly stretching it as you go. Once you reach the end, let the dough overlap and criss-cross as you wind it back the other way until you run out of dough.
- Optional: wrap with a second piece of dough. Be sure to leave gaps (especially one for the eyes), so the hot dog peaks through the dough; this makes it look more mummy like.
How long to bake
These will bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven for 10-15 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through.
Can i make mummy dogs in the air fryer?
To make these in the air fryer:
- Preheat air fryer to 325 degrees F.
- Place 3-4 wrapped hot dogs (as many as you can fit without overlapping) in the preheated air fryer and air fry until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes.
- Repeat with remaining mummy dogs and enjoy!
Variations
- Different hot dog. Try your favorite hot dog: cheese filled, turkey dog, all beef dog, little smokies, etc. Stick with the standard sized dog though; if it’s too thick, it’ll take too long to heat through.
- Different pastry. If you can’t find the dough without perforations, use crescent rolls instead. Simply pinch the perforations together, then continue on with the recipe as written. The crescent pizza dough would also be a great option! Puff pastry should also work; be sure to thaw and bake according to package directions.
Tips
These mummy dogs are insanely easy; I promise you can’t mess them up!
- Dry the hot dogs. Drying the hot dogs before wrapping allows the dough to stick to the hot dog.
- Use a pizza cutter. Cut the dough using a pizza cutter. It’s quick, easier, and more accurate than using a knife or scissors.
- Don’t completely cover the hot dog. Leaving gaps allows the hot dog to peak through the dough, which makes it look more mummy like!
What to serve with mummy hot dogs
These hot dogs are best served next to your favorite dipping sauces and other spooky Halloween treats!
- Ketchup and mustard
- Honey Mustard
- Fry Sauce
- Chick-fil-A Sauce
- Instant Pot Chili (perfect for dunking)
- Halloween Monster Eye Cookies
- Monster Munch
- Candy Cookies
- Devil’s Margarita
Can you make mummy hot dogs in advance?
Mummy hot dogs are best served right away, but if making them in advance is necessary:
- Make and bake as directed.
- After baking, let cool completely (don’t add the candy eyeballs), then store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
- Re-heat in a 350 degree F oven for 5 minutes, or until warm.
- Add the eyeballs, then serve and enjoy!
How to store
Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months. To enjoy again, bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven until hot. – Jennifer
