Breakfast Grilled Cheese. A classic grilled cheese sandwich loaded with a gooey fried egg, savory sausage, and a generous drizzle of maple syrup!
Thanks to our friends at Sara Lee Bread® for sponsoring today’s post!
Omg. Omg. Omg. Omg.
Breakfast grilled cheese, you guys.
Think classic grilled cheese stuffed with a gooey fried egg and savory breakfast sausage all drizzled in maple syrup, because, um, what’s breakfast without a little drizzle of sweet maple syrup?!
April just so happens to be National Grilled Cheese Month and April 12th is more specifically National Grilled Cheese Day (is that not ah-mazing?!), so what better way to celebrate than with the BEST grilled cheese ever?!
Aka
this breakfast grilled cheese.
Anyone totally drooling yet?
Today’s breakfast grilled cheese recipe was inspired, as most of my recipes are, by a serious craving.
I REALLY wanted a grilled cheese sandwich the other day, but it was only 9 AM on a Saturday morning when this craving hit, so I thought: how can I make this more appropriate for breakfast?
Why don’t I just add some sausage, egg, and maple syrup to a classic grilled cheese?
Done. Done. Annnnnd. Done.
So. Um. Yum.
You with me?!
Let’s make some breakfast grilled cheese, shall we?!
Today’s grilled cheese, as all good grilled cheeses do, starts with really awesome bread: Sara Lee® Artesano™ Golden Wheat Bread.
This is the original artisan-style sliced bread! Artesano Golden Wheat is sliced thick, is sooooo soft, and is made with a touch of honey, olive oil, and sea salt. Plus, there’s no high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, or colors <– yes!!!
Grilled cheese needs a good base and Sara Lee definitely delivers.
You’ll take one slice of the bread and top it with a slice of American cheese. Place two fully cooked and heated sausage patties on top of that.
Bread –> cheese –> sausage patties. Got it?
Set the bread/cheese/sausage aside while you fry an egg in a little butter.
Once the egg has cooked, remove from the pan (keep it warm though!) and place it on top of the sausages. *Gently* top with another slice of American cheese, then finish with another piece of bread.
Bread –> cheese –> sausage patties –> fried egg –> cheese –> bread. Got it?
Add a little more butter to the still warm pan, if necessary, then cook the grilled cheese on one side until golden brown.
Gently flip over (careful to not break the yolk) and continue cooking until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is melted to your liking.
Drizzle with maple syrup and serve!
Classic, rich, gooey grilled cheese with savory sausage, a runny egg, and sweet maple syrup? Breakfast grilled cheese really is the best kind of grilled cheese. 🙂
