While not much to look at, these ugly duckling bars have a base of buttery graham crackers that are then topped with chocolate chips, sweetened coconut, and sweetened condensed milk. What’s ugly about that?!
Ugly duckling bars are like that reeeeally sweet guy in school. You all knew him. Maaaybe not the best looking guy out there, but he was so sweet and soooo smart, but was one of those guys that could never get passed the friend zone. Study buddy? Yes. Love at first sight guy? Not quite.
Flash forward to your ten year reunion and who should walk through the door, but that really sweet guy that you all turned down who just sold his startup to Google for five billion dollars, who is really attractive now, and is still the sweetest guy you’ve ever met.
That’s the ugly duckling bars. They may not look like much, but ten years from now you’ll be glad I introduced you and you’ll be telling everyone you don’t know what your life would have been like if you hadn’t met and given them a chance 🙂
Long story short ladies, don’t turn down that really sweet guy or these ugly bars quite yet, because it may just turn into true love!
You may know these bars as magic bars, that’s what my mom called them when I was growing up, but I think ugly duckling bars is much more appropriate.
Why do you need these bars in your life, you ask? Well, they start with a graham cracker crust. Just pour melted butter in a 9 x 13 inch pan and then sprinkle finely ground graham crackers evenly over the butter and press down firmly. Come on, graham crackers smothered in melted butter? There’s nothing ugly about that!
Then scatter chocolate chips over the crust. Mmmmm chocolatey goodness going on over here, heeeey!
Next, sprinkle sweetened coconut flakes over the chocolate chips, don’t blink because we’re almost done!
The last step is to cover the entire thing in the sweet, sweet, so yummy and luscious sweetened condensed milk.
Bake the bars in a preheated 350 degree F oven for about 20 – 25 minutes.
Let the bars cool down for a few minutes to let them firm up, but hey, they’re not that pretty anyway, I say just go for it and dig in with a fork!
The first bite is the best, the corners are slightly chewy thanks to the sweetened condensed milk, then you’ll taste the sweetened coconut that adds just the right amount of texture. Next you’ll hit that melty chocolate that makes you craave a cold glass of milk (or two), and last you’ll hit that ever so slightly crunchy, buttery graham cracker crust. Are you drooling yet, because I just had to wipe a little off my chin.
You won’t regret making these ugly duckling bars. As I said before, they’re not much to look at, but the combination of graham crackers, chocolate, coconut, and sweetened condensed milk is going to make you put on your love googles, and fall head over heals in love with them!
