How To Make Crescent Rolls Better: a few simple ways to turn your canned rolls into Cheesy Garlic Crescent Rolls. They’re loaded with ooey-gooey cheese and slathered in a melty garlic butter.
I absolutely love bread. Especially at the holiday dinner table. I don’t love, however, how long it takes to make said bread. My solution? Semi-homemade recipes like these cheesy garlic crescent rolls and my very favorite Rhodes Rolls. Let the professionals do the hard part, then take your frozen or in this case canned bread dough home and doctor it up to make it even better!
Ingredients
Less than 10 ingredients (that you probably have on hand already) take these canned crescent rolls to the next level!
- Crescent Rolls – there are so many different options: original, flaky, honey butter, sweet Hawaiian, etc. I tested these using the original flavor by Pillsbury. Whatever flavor/brand you choose, you’ll need 1 (8 oz) tube that makes 8 crescent rolls.
- Cheese – use whole milk string cheese for the best creamy flavor and gooey texture, but any variety of string cheese (low moisture, cheddar, etc.) should still work. If necessary, you can skip the cheese.
- Butter – salted or unsalted butter is fine. If using salted, omit the additional salt. Olive oil may also work.
- Garlic – use freshly minced or, my preference, a pre-minced jarred variety. You’ll need 1 tablespoon or 4 large cloves.
- Parmesan – I like using a finely grated cheese, because that’s what I always have on hand (yes, the kind in the green can is just fine). A blend of parmesan, asiago, and/or romano would also be delicious.
- Spices: Dried Basil, Parsley, Salt, and Pepper – I used dried spices, because they’re affordable and I always have the in my pantry, but fresh herbs may be used as well. For every 1/2 teaspoon dried, you’d need 1/2 tablespoon freshly minced.
How to make
- In a small bowl, stir together butter, parmesan, garlic, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper until combined, then set aside.
- Unroll crescent rolls onto a silicone mat lined baking sheet, separate into triangles, place halved string cheese at widest end.
- Roll up, then tuck in the edges to seal.
- Evenly spoon the garlic butter over the rolled rolls and bake in preheated oven until golden brown.
- Serve warm with dipping sauce (if desired) and enjoy!
Tips
- Keep the rolls cold. Keep the can sealed in the fridge while you preheat the oven and prep the butter sauce. This seems the dough easy to work with, because as it warms up, it can get sticky.
- Tuck the ends in. After rolling the dough to create the classic crescent roll shape, tuck the sides in to create a seal around the cheese to prevent leaking.
What to serve with crescent rolls
These rolls are great-as is or served with your favorite dipping sauce. They made a great side to any main dish!
- Dipping Sauce. Alfredo, ranch, marinara
- Pasta. Spaghetti, lasagna, or chicken alfredo (see all our pastas here).
- Soups and Stews. Tomato, chicken gnocchi, or creamy potato soup are amazing (see all our soups here).
- Meats. BBQ pork chops, air fryer meatballs, chicken meatloaf, etc.
How to store
Leftovers will last in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 1 month.
