Snickers Salad is a sweet treat made with tart apples, nutty Snickers, and creamy cool whip. This easy dessert salad will surely be the crowd favorite at your next potluck!
What is snickers salad?
Snickers salad is another classic Midwestern salad that isn’t really a salad. It’s a simple dish made with cool whip, apples, snickers, and a few other ingredients that is often served at large gatherings or potlucks as a side dish or dessert.
Why you’ll love it
- Easy. You’re less than 10 ingredients and 30 minutes away from the best salad of the season.
- Crowd Favorite. Who wouldn’t love a “salad” that’s made with candy?!
- Versatile. Play around by using different flavors of pudding mix and varieties of fruits and candies.
Ingredients
- Cream Cheese – use full-fat for the best results, although a reduce fat variety may be used, if desired.
- Sour Cream – again, use full-fat for the best results. You may be able to get away with a very thick plain yogurt. If you like a sweeter dessert, a vanilla yogurt may be used, but it will likely result in a runnier consistency.
- Pudding Mix – you’ll need 1 (3.4 oz) box instant pudding mix. I like vanilla, but another flavor such as butterscotch may also be used.
- Vanilla Extract – can omit, if necessary, it simply adds additional vanilla flavor.
- Cool Whip – if you don’t want to use cool whip, try making homemade cool whip, a store-bought sub like truwhip or coconut cool whip, or make a simple, homemade whipped cream with cream, sugar, and vanilla.
- Apples – you’ll need 2 pounds Granny Smith apples, chopped into bite sized pieces. No need to peel the skin, the green color looks so pretty in the salad, but feel free if you’re not a fan. Granny Smith’s are definitely the best apple for this, because they’re sturdy and tart, but Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious might also be ok. If you’re really looking to mix it up, I’ve seen people make this with grapes and/or strawberries as well.
- Snickers – you’ll need 12 full-size snickers bars (about 1 1/2 pounds). Chop them the same size as the apple chunks, so you get a piece of apple and Snickers in every bite! Use milky-way to make this peanut free (although check your labels to verify). Kit-Kats or Twix would also be delicious.
- Peanuts – use roasted, salted peanuts for the best flavor. The extra salt balances the sweetness from the cool whip. Another nut, such as pecans may be used instead or omit, if desired.
Pro tip
Some people like drizzling caramel sauce on top before serving for a pretty presentation!
How to make
- Use a hand mixer to beat together cream cheese, sour cream, vanilla pudding mix, and vanilla extract in a large bowl, stir in cool whip, then fold in apples, snickers, and peanuts.
- Cover and chill until ready to serve!
How to store
This is definitely best served the day its made (the apples will eventually start to brown), but it will be fine in the fridge if stored in a sealed airtight container for a couple days.
