These Caramel Apple Pie Dumplings are an absolutely melt-in-your-mouth, warm, gooey, and oh-so-delicious dessert! Apple pie filling and caramel tucked inside a golden-brown, flakey biscuit and coated with cinnamon and brown sugar.
You’d never guess how easy these caramel apple pie dumplings are based on how decadent they taste. People will think you slaved all day in the kitchen after they take one bite of these fluffy, yet crisp cinnamon sugar coated biscuits stuffed with warm apple pie filling and oozing caramel.
Nobody needs to know that you’re using canned biscuits, pre-made apple pie filling, and a store-bought creamy caramel. 😉
PSST – Don’t forget the ice cream. Because what’s warm apple pie without a big scoop of vanilla ice cream?!
What are apple pie dumplings?
A dumpling is a dish that consists of some sort of dough wrapped around some sort of filling. An apple pie dumpling, in this case, is canned biscuit dough wrapped around a gooey caramel and apple pie filling.
You may also see apple pie dumplings made with puff pastry, pie dough, crescent rolls, homemade pie filling, etc.
Ingredients
I wanted to keep these semi-homemade, so the ingredient list is very short. You’ll start with a cinnamon sugar topping and finish with the caramel apple filling and biscuit “dumpling”.
Cinnamon Sugar Topping
Adds a sweet crunch and also encourages a beautiful browning of the top of the biscuit.
- Brown Sugar – I used dark brown sugar for flavor, but light brown sugar will work as well! If you’re in a pinch, you can use granulated sugar, but I love the rich molasses flavor the brown sugar gives.
- Cinnamon – adds a sweet-spiciness that pairs perfectly with the brown sugar.
- Unsalted Butter – makes the topping crumbly and *ahem* buttery.
- Vanilla Extract – gives warmth and flavor to the topping.
Apple Pie Dumplings
All of the ingredients below are pre-made, which is absolutely amazing! Feel free to use homemade, but your results may vary.
- Apple Pie Filling – I use a canned filling which is a thick and gooey filling made up of sliced apples, brown sugar, butter, and spices.
- Old Fashioned Caramel Dip – adds a rich and creamy caramel-y flavor and gooey texture.
- Biscuit Dough – these are so buttery, flakey, and a little salty to contrast the sweet filling. I use refrigerated pre-made biscuit dough. I don’t recommend the “flaky layers” variety, because they tend to separate too much while cooking. Whatever you use should contain 8 biscuits!
- Vanilla Ice Cream, Whipped Cream, Caramel Sauce, Pecans – for serving! The ice cream contrasts the hot dumpling and the pecan adds a nice crunch. The extra caramel sauce . . . #YOLO.
How to make caramel apple pie dumplings
Because we’re mainly using pre-made ingredients, these decadent dumplings come together very quickly, making them perfect for a last minute dessert!
- Use a whisk to mix together your cinnamon sugar topping ingredients in a small bowl. Set aside.
- In a separate bowl, mix together apple pie filling and caramel dip. Set aside.
- Flatten your biscuit dough on a clean work surface then top each biscuit with 2 tablespoons of your filling.
- Pull the sides of the dough up around the filling and pinch the seams together then use your hands to shape the biscuit into a ball. See video for visuals.
- Place into a jumbo muffin tin. Drizzle with topping, bake, then enjoy with ice cream (or whipped cream), an extra drizzle of caramel, and pecans!
And that’s all! Get ready to dive into this warm and gooey dessert. 🙂
My favorite part about this recipe is that it’s already portioned out for you! Each person gets their own dumpling and can add as much or as little toppings as they chose. I don’t know about you, but perfectly portioning out desserts by slicing and serving isn’t my forte!
Can i make apple dumplings ahead of time?
If you need to make these ahead of time, simply follow the directions listed, but before you bake them, cover the muffin tin with plastic wrap, then refrigerate for up to 48 hours. Let the dumplings come back to room temperature before baking (*not tested).
Can i freeze baked apple pie dumplings?
You can freeze completely cooked and cooled dumplings for 2-3 months.
To freeze, simply place the dumplings on a baking sheet lined with a silicone baking mat so they’re not touching, then freeze for 1-2 hours.
After they are frozen through, transfer the dumplings to an airtight container or a ziplock baggie to store in the freezer.
How to store
These caramel apple pie dumplings can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-5 days or in the freezer for 2-3 months!
How to reheat apple dumplings
While these dumplings are best served hot outta the oven, you also have a few different options to re-heat them:
- To reheat refrigerated OR frozen dumplings in the oven: Place dumplings on a lined baking sheet, cover with foil, then bake at 350 degrees F for 10-12 minutes or until warmed through. Frozen dumplings will obviously take longer to heat through than refrigerated dumplings.
- To reheat refrigerated dumplings in the microwave: Place dumplings on a microwave-safe plate and microwave until heated through (roughly 30 seconds.)
- To reheat frozen dumplings in the microwave: Heat on defrost setting in the microwave for 5 minutes or until thawed, then microwave at full power for 30 seconds.
Microwaving is the quicker option, but the oven helps to maintain some of the original fluffy, yet crisp texture of the biscuit.
Either way, it’s biscuits stuffed with gooey caramel and sweet apple pie filling and topped with vanilla ice cream . . . you can’t go wrong.
