This Oreo Frosting is a vanilla buttercream kicked up a notch! This whipped frosting is sweet, creamy, and packed with crushed Oreo cookies.
What is buttercream icing?
Buttercream is a frosting made by creaming butter, sugar, salt, heavy cream, and vanilla together until sweet, smooth, and fluffy. Today’s recipe uses the addition of crushed Oreos to provide a chocolate flavor and subtle crunchy texture.
Ingredients
Only 6 ingredients necessary to make the best Oreo frosting!
- Unsalted Butter – the base of our buttercream! Salted butter or even margarine may be used instead. Regardless, it should be brought to room temperature for the fluffiest, smoothest result. If using salted butter, reduce the added salt in half or completely omit.
- Powdered Sugar – sweetens and thickens the frosting. Powdered sugar is the only sugar that may be used. Granulated or brown sugar would result in a very grainy frosting. Be sure to sift the powered sugar to avoid clumps.
- Salt – enhances the flavor of the Oreos while also helping to cut the sweetness from the powdered sugar. Salt keeps this frosting from being overly sweet.
- Heavy Cream – thins the frosting while also keeping it light, fluffy, creamy, and ultra smooth!
- Vanilla Extract – adds depth of flavor to the frosting. Pure vanilla extract (vs imitation) is preferred in this recipe, because the flavor is very prominent.
- Oreos – the MVP! Both the chocolate cookie and the cream filling are used. Simply place whole cookies into a food processor and process until they resemble fine crumbs.
How to make
This buttercream can be made using a stand mixer or hand mixer! This Oreo icing is as easy as 1,2,3!
- Beat butter for 60 seconds, then slowly add in powdered sugar and salt.
- Drizzle in heavy cream and vanilla, then beat until well combined and fluffy.
- Gently beat in Oreos and decorate cake, cupcakes, cookies, etc. as desired!
Can I use margarine?
Yes. You can use equal parts room temperature margarine to replace the butter.
Can I use granulated sugar?
No, using granulated sugar would create a very gritty texture. Powdered sugar is very smooth and is the best and only sugar to use in a buttercream frosting.
How to make thinner
If the oreo buttercream is too thick, slowly beat in additional heavy cream until thinned to your liking.
How to thicken
If the oreo icing becomes too thin, slowly beat in additional sifted powered sugar until thickened to your liking.
Tips
- Use room temperature butter. Butter that is too cold or too warm won’t aerate properly.
- Sift powdered sugar. For the smoothest texture, be sure to use a sieve to remove any clumps that may have formed in the powdered sugar.
- Use a cookie scoop to decorate. We’re using extra Oreos, so this frosting is very thick. Use a medium cookie scoop or large cookie scoop to easily frost cakes, cupcakes, and/or cookies. Spread the mound of frosting with a knife and garnish with crushed Oreos!
How to use
Cake, cookies, and more! This frosting can be used in a variety of different ways.
- Frost cake and cupcakes. Bake up your favorite cake or cupcakes and use it as a fun twist on traditional frosting.
- Top or sandwich cookies. Spread it over your favorite cookies or sandwich it between two red velvet cookies for a cookie sandwich!
- Spread it. Spread it on graham crackers or your favorite crunchy store-bought cookie.
- Dunk it. Thin with heavy cream and use it as a dip for seasonal fruit.
How to store
Leftover frosting can be stored in an airtight container for 3 days at room temperature, 1 month in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.
To enjoy again, thaw in the fridge, if frozen, then allow to come to room temperature before using as desired.
