Ingredients

  • 1 (16 oz) package Italian sausage sweet, mild, or hot
  • 1 small yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 large carrot finely diced
  • 1 rib celery finely diced
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 (24 oz) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 (16 oz) box gnocchi cooked according to box directions
  • 1 (8 oz) bag shredded whole milk mozzarella cheese
  • 2-4 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  • Place sausage, onion, carrot, celery, garlic, and a touch of salt into a sauté pan* and cook over medium heat, breaking up the meat as you go, until the sausage is no longer pink and the veggies are tender**.
  • Drain excess grease, if necessary, stir in the marinara sauce, then gently fold in the cooked gnocchi and 1/2 the mozzarella cheese.
  • Taste and season with salt***, if necessary, then pour into a greased 8x8 inch baking dish.
  • Top with remaining mozzarella cheese, sprinkle with parmesan cheese, broil in the oven on the middle rack until the mozzarella cheese has melted, then serve and enjoy!

Notes

*If you have an oven safe skillet, feel free to use that instead of a sauté pan and an 8x8 baking dish.
**If you’re using really lean sausage, you may need to add a splash of olive oil or a couple tablespoons of butter to cook the veggies.
***If you’re using a pretty bland flavored sausage, you may need to add additional seasonings such as Italian seasoning, dried basil, dried oregano, etc.
See Ingredients for suggestions on using other meats, adding/subtracting veggies, etc.
