  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter 1/2 cup = 1 stick
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried sage
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • Salt to taste, if necessary (I use 1/4 teaspoon)

  • Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Little by little, whisk in flour until smooth.
  • Whisk in pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, rosemary, and sage until smooth.
  • Use a rubber spatula* to cook and stir mixture over medium heat for 5 minutes (mixture will simmer).
  • Gradually whisk in broth, so that no lumps form.
  • Simmer, stirring regularly, until desired texture has been reached.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, thin with more broth.
