Turkey Sloppy Joes Recipe

Ingredients

Turkey Sloppy Joes

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 pound 93% lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup yellow onion diced (about 1/2 onion)
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper diced (about 1/2 pepper)
  • 1 carrot peeled and minced
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon hot sauce optional
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Sargento® Sliced Cheese We like Cheddar or Pepper Jack
  • Whole wheat buns
  • baby spinach optional

Instructions

Turkey Sloppy Joes

  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat, add in oil.
  • Once hot, stir in turkey, onion, pepper, and carrot.
  • Cook, breaking up the turkey as you go, until the turkey is cooked and veggies are soft, about 7 minutes.
  • While above is cooking, whisk together the remaining ingredients for the sauce: tomato paste, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, mustard, hot sauce, garlic powder, and salt.
  • Stir the sauce into the turkey/veggie mixture and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat to keep at a simmer for about 3-5 minutes or until sauce has thickened slightly.
  • Taste and re-season if necessary.

Assembly

  • Preheat broiler.
  • Place the bottom buns on a rimmed 9x13 in baking sheet.
  • Place turkey mixture on the buns.
  • Place cheese slice onto the turkey mixture.
  • Place in broiler until cheese is melty.
  • Top with optional baby spinach and the top bun.
  • Serve and enjoy!
