Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise – a rich and creamy base for the dressing. I like to use an olive oil based mayo but you can lighten it up even more by using plain Greek yogurt and an extra tablespoon or two of olive oil.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – adds a tart, tangy flavor to cut the richness of the mayo.
  • Olive Oil – rounds out the tang of the ACV with a warm nuttiness.
  • Granulated Sugar – add a subtle sweetness that makes this dressing perfect for savory and sweet alike.
  • Poppy Seeds – give the dressing texture and add a nutty almost fruity flavor.
  • Dijon Mustard – gives the sweet and creamy dressing a little bit of spice.
  • Salt, Onion Powder, and Garlic Powder – a simple seasoning trio that finish out the flavors in this delicious dressing.

How to make

Throwing together this poppyseed dressing is so easy and takes just 5 minutes!

  1. Place mayo, vinegar, olive oil, sugar, poppy seeds, dijon, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder into a sealable container.
  2. Shake until well-combined then serve and enjoy!

Is poppy seed dressing good for you?

The great thing about homemade dressings is that you control exactly what’s going into them.

Although I wouldn’t call this homemade poppyseed dressing the healthiest of all time, it’s much better for you than store-bought dressings are! It also does contain ingredients, like apple cider vinegar and poppyseeds, that provide health benefits and nutrients.

Pro tip
Make an even healthier dressing by swapping the sour cream out for plain Greek yogurt and a couple tablespoons of olive oil.

Variations

  • Make it vegan. Use vegan sour cream instead to keep this dressing dairy free.
  • Use another vinegar. Absolutely hate apple cider vinegar? Use red wine vinegar or white wine vinegar instead.
  • Make lemon poppyseed dressing. Give your dressing a bright, citrus-y flavor twist by using lemon juice in place of the apple cider vinegar.
  • Lighten it up. Use plain Greek yogurt and a couple tablespoons of olive oil instead of sour cream for a healthier, higher protein dressing.

How to serve poppyseed dressing

  • Over salad. Try it on strawberry spinach salad, kale salad, roasted squash arugula salad, you name it.
  • In fruit salad. Toss it with your favorite fruit salad to give it a little something extra.
  • On toast. Drizzle it over a slice of avocado toast.
  • In coleslaw. Use it in this coleslaw recipe in place of the sauce listed.
  • Over pasta salad. Drizzle it over your favorite pasta salad for a delicious creamy and tangy flavor twist.

How to store

This poppyseed dressing will last for up to 1 week in the fridge.

To enjoy again, thin with a splash of water, if necessary.
