Love ranch? Make some then get your dip on with any of these recipes: air fryer chicken nuggets, ham and cheese monkey bread, roasted breakfast potatoes, bbq chickpeas pinwheels, and chicken wonton cups!Β

I love Ranch Dressing. Some peopleΒ may judge me for this, but when I went to college I was still an extremely picky eater.

Veggies – no go.

Fruit – ehhh, I could take it or leave it.

I was determined, however, to become a healthy eater.

This was the first time in my life that I could chose when and what I was eating.

With that in mind, I started forcing myself to eat mainly fruits, veggies, and lean proteins, but I couldn’t just dive straight in to the hard core stuff – you know – the spinach and other veggies, without something to help “mask” the flavor.

So what did I smother it in?

Ranch, of course!

Now. I know Ranch isn’t healthy . . .

How bad is ranch dressing for you?

Bottled ranch dressing contains approximately 72.5 calories, 15 grams of fat, and .3 grams of protein per tablespoon. Not great, right?

So . . .

What is a good substitute for ranch?

This. πŸ˜‰

This greek yogurt ranch dressing is the PERFECT substitute. I promise you. It’s just as delicious, but it has a fraction of the calories.

My homemade greek yogurt ranch dressing has 12 calories, 0 grams of fat, and 1 gram of protein. Yep. You read that right – 12 calories. Soooo drink up! If you’d like to up the fat and protein, feel free to use a high fat greek yogurt!

If that’s not a win-win, I’m not sure what is!

Now that I enjoy eating salads and vegetables, I don’t NEED Ranch dressing, but sometimes I really miss the taste of it!

I’ve seen healthy Ranch dressing recipes around the web for years now, and finally decided to make my own Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing.

I’ve missed you old friend.

Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing - easy, healthy, and delicious! 200 calories for the ENTIRE recipe! showmetheyummy.com #healthy #ranch #dressing #salad #glutenfree #vegetarian #lightenedup #greekyogurt

Because I missed Ranch so much, I went toΒ go buy some, but the calorie count and mystery contents in the bottle made me choose otherwise.

What is the base of ranch dressing?

If you look on the back of a standard bottle of ranch, you’ll find vegetable oil as the first ingredient listed.

For this recipe, the base is greek yogurt! This keeps this homemade ranch dressing super creamy with fewer calories AND more protein.

Another win-win?

Um. Yes!

So, instead of picking up that bottle of ranch, I picked up some greek yogurt and buttermilk and went to work.

How do you make ranch dressing from scratch?

You guys. It’s SO easy. It’s almost as easy as opening up the bottle. πŸ˜‰

Throw all your ingredients into a food processor:

  • Spices: parsley, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and chives
  • Non fat plain greek yogurt
  • Buttermilk
  • Dijon mustard
  • Lemon juice

Blend and serve!

That’s it! Is that insanely easy or what?!

Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing - easy, healthy, and delicious! 200 calories for the ENTIRE recipe! showmetheyummy.com #healthy #ranch #dressing #salad #glutenfree #vegetarian #lightenedup #greekyogurt Because other than this homemade greek yogurt ranch dressing being ridiculously easy to make,Β it also tastes SO much better than store bought Ranch, you can customize the seasoningsΒ to your liking (my favorite thing about cooking), and it’s healthier!

Healthier as in, The WHOLE recipe is only 192 calories and this makes 1 cup (16 tablespoons). Β ONE SERVING of bottled Ranch, 2 tablespoons, is 140 calories!

The equivalent withΒ my recipeΒ is onlyΒ 24 calories.

Boom! It doesn’t get better than that.

Homemade Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing - easy, healthy, and delicious! 200 calories for the ENTIRE recipe! showmetheyummy.com #healthy #ranch #dressing #salad #glutenfree #vegetarian #lightenedup #greekyogurt I think I have such a special place in my heart for Ranch, because I grew up eating it.

The only vegetables I really ate growing up were carrots and only if there was a higher Ranch to carrot ratio. πŸ˜‰

That love of Ranch, as you now know,Β went with me to college, and has stuck with me ever since!

I’m so happy that I now have a healthy homemade greek yogurt ranch dressing recipe that I can whip up any time I want!

I think Trevor will be especially happy, since he takesΒ a salad for lunch every day, and I think he gets bored with his go-to dressing.

5 stars I make homemade full-fat Greek Yogurt in my Instant Pot a couple of times a month. I can control its thickness by the amount of time I drain it afterward. I will make it thicker for this recipe. I think many homemade Ranch dressings also contain dill so I will try it this way and also with dill. Thank you for this easy, lower calorie recipe!

5 stars Made this recipe today with all ingredients and just one change: I used full fat greek yogurt as that is our preference. I used the highest amounts on all the seasonings and my only complaint is that the salt was a tad bit high. But overall this is a great tasting recipe! This will be our new go to Ranch! Thanks so much!

Any non-dairy milk should be fine, you’ll likely need less since it might not be as thick as regular milk. Do you have a substitute for the greek yogurt as well?

5 stars Absolutely love this! Veggies just taste even fresher now; I never noticed how “oily(?)” regular ranch felt before eating this. I will have to play around with the seasoning measurements a bit, since I like much stronger tasting foods. But for a first test batch, it was excellent! Thank you for sharing!

3 stars Is there a substitute for buttermilk? I can’t have dairy milk. I made it with the higher amount of garlic and onion powders and the lower amount of salt, plain almond milk yogurt. It’s missing something…any suggestions? Thanks!

Hard to say what it’s missing, because I haven’t tried almond milk yogurt before. Does it need more tang? More spice? More salt? More herbs? You could use a non-dairy milk and lemon juice as a sub for the buttermilk.

5 stars I went ahead and added dill… Which is what my family was missing and a bit of extra pepper… And one child required about a half a teaspoon of mayo in order to make it very kid friendly… I did not tell them it was made of Greek yogurt… and they loved it just the same, and I didn’t feel guilty! Lemon juice, and nonfat milk does help make it lower fat.(to answer some of the questions about buttermilk….)

5 stars Buttermilk has minimal fat in it… It is by definition close to fat free as it is the milk left over after removing the butter (fat)

5 stars The buttermilk that is available in the grocery stores is cultured buttermilk and is not a byproduct of butter production. The fat content of the cultured buttermilk depends on the milk being cultured, so the product varies from zero to the four percent of whole milk. If you want zero fat, find buttermilk with zero fat, which is commonly available. Thank you for this recipe. It is a great substitute for commercial ranch made with questionable ingredients.

Listen…it’s pretty good, but for me ranch dressing needs dill to achieve that “hidden” flavor. And I love dijon in a vinegarette but it feels out of place here. So make those little swaps and we’ve got an all time classic here.

Very excited to try this recipe! Quick question: is the Dijon mustard necessary, and if so is there anything I could use as a substitute? I’m not a fan of mustard at all, and even little amounts I can always taste. I’m hoping I can get the same results for this recipe without it or with some substitute. Thank you for your help!

5 stars I added fresh parsley, dill weed and some pepper. The mixture was too thin for my liking so I added 1/2 tablespoon of xanthan gum and continued to blend until it thickened. As a vegetarian who is also trying to lose weight this is a MUST HAVE for my fridge! I’ll never go back to 140 calorie amounts of dressing that literally leave a salad DRY – last week before I looked into this method – I had a snack of veges with ranch… I easily ate 1/4 cup of it and I don’t even want to think of the additional calories LOL Great recipe!!!!

Hi, TJ! You can. If you like a thicker dressing you can just leave the buttermilk out entirely. If you prefer a thinner texture you can add in any milk (dairy or non-dairy) until your desired texture is reached. Water will work in a pinch but I would recommend adding more seasonings if you do that since it will dilute the dressing. Hope you enjoy!

5 stars This is so delicious! I have been using store-bought Yogurt Ranch, and I hate that it contains Carrageenan, sugar, soybean oil, and other sketchy ingredients. I am trying to eat healthier after the past year of eating a lot of processed foods (yay, pandemic!). Anyway, I followed the recipe exactly. I made my own buttermilk by using 1/3 cup of milk with 1 tsp lemon juice and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. I also used 1.5 tsp of onion powder and 1 tsp of garlic powder as the recipe suggests 1/2-2 tsp of each. The ratio I used was great, although I will probably just used 1 tsp of each next time. This dressing is super flavorful, and I am shocked that it is so lower calories yet bursts with flavor. I can not wait to try it tomorrow after it’s been sitting for a full day in the fridge. I bet it will be even more delicious!! SIDE NOTE: Why do people feel the need to post reviews on a recipe they did not follow. I almost didn’t make this because there were some lower reviews. Upon reading these reviews, the reviewer did not even follow the recipe. How are you going to review a recipe when you just made up your own recipe? What kind of monsters are you doing this?? Suppose you did not try the recipe EXACTLY as written do not review! People, please…stop! I had to get that off my chest! TRY THIS RECIPE. IT IS AMAZING. Your taste buds and waistline will thank you!

I have tried at least 6-7 different home made ranch dressing recipes and this one, like the others was a disappointment. When I made it I followed it completely and like the others it has a sour taste from the yogurt. Ranch dressing that I love has NO sour taste. At first I was surprised how thick it was when the comment on the recipe was that it would be thin–I could use mine as a dip, could not pour it for dressing. I watched it being made on Instagram which was helpful–the greek yogurt being used looked much thinner than mine (Fage is very thick) so that explained that. But the sour taste and blandness is not good. I will increase the spices (as indicated on the recipe you can, I added 1 tsp of the garlic & onion powder) and I love the idea of how healthy this is, but what to do for the sour taste? Something to add to neutralize it? I made the recipe again using Best Foods light mayo and it was so good!!! Couldn’t believe the difference in just switching out the greek yogurt–but would prefer to use the yogurt due to it’s health benefits. Suggestions on the sour taste???

Hi, Jennifer. The sour taste could be the brand of yogurt you used so you could always try different brands until you find a one that isn’t too sour for your taste. You could also try using half mayo and half yogurt for a bit of a happy medium. Hope that helps!!

4 stars I didn’t have fresh chives or buttermilk but I did have freeze dried chives and regular milk. I substituted 1/3 cup skim milk plus 1/3tbsp white vinegar. Also substituted 1 1/2 tsp freese dried chives instead of the 1 tbsp of fresh. It’s a pretty decent low calorie substitute for ranch and can help you make veges and salads less monotonous with a creamy alternative to all oil and vinegar based dressings. I recommend giving it a shot.

5 stars I know this may sound crazy or yucky to some, but for those willing to try I don’t think you will be disappointed! We added some fat free cottage cheese to ours after all the blending was done to give it some texture and thicken it up a bit. It was AMAZING!!! Even the pickiest eaters lived it once I convinced them to try it. Especially good on salads. We did it about 1/3 ratio for anyone interested. So if you made a cup of ranch you would add 1/3 cup of cottage cheese. This wouldn’t be possible without this great recipe, thank you!

4 stars First of all great recipe. I’m trying to get it to taste like our homemade ranch. What is the best way to keep the tangy flavor while making it thinner? It’s a little thick for us. More buttermilk / lemon or add milk / lemon?
    • Jennifer @ Show Me the Yummy

      July 4, 2020 at 9:08 am

Thanks so much! Did you already use the amount of buttermilk called for? I’m surprised you think it’s too thick, as it’s pretty thin! I’d alternate splashes of buttermilk and lemon juice until the desired consistency is reached.

I make homemade yogurt and can have it as “standard” or drain the whey for greek..it’s always on hand…although I do use buttermilk occasionally for cooking it’s not something I drink and I usually plan several recipes to make sure I use it up…my question is can you just use “regular yogurt” and skip the buttermilk? I considered using a ranch dressing packet along with some homemade yogurt.

You can also easily make homemade buttermilk when you need it. Just place 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in a glass and add one cup of milk. Let sit for 5 minutes and it will curdle. I don’t keep buttermilk “on hand” so this is a great sub when a recipe calls for it.

5 stars This recipe looks great! I was thinking about making a bigger batch of this and was wondering how long you think this would last in the fridge after it is made?

5 stars I tried this last night — it is excellent. Thank you for the recipe. It is not only great in terms of calories, it is more natural. I was reading the labels on salad dressings and sugar is almost always the first ingredient in all of them (plus the untold mystery ingredients on the label).

2 stars Made this last night, and while I think it’s on track, I think there is WAY too much garlic and onion powder in this, and too much salt, as well. The garlic flavor just lingers and lingers in the mouth forever after eating just a little bit of this. I would cut all three of those ingredients in HALF or less, and I think this would be on track to be a GREAT recipe. For my taste, I’d start with 1/2 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp garlic powder, and 1 tsp onion powder. If you need more, you can always add it in, but I made the mistake of going against my judgement that 2 tsp sounded like a LOT of garlic and I would just try the recipe as is once. Nope. Too much. Start small and build it up to your taste, because this makes a lot of ranch, too! I’m going to use the salty garlic heavy batch for a marinade, which should work great, and I’m going to try again with the measures I’m suggesting.

Thanks for making this, Christopher! I LOVE garlic and onion, so I like the recipe as is, but great suggestion on starting with a little and adding it to suit your tastebuds! πŸ™‚ Love the idea of making this into a marinade, too!

I agree, Jennifer. A recipe is a guide- especially when it comes to spices. Add, subtract…. I love the avocado addition for creaminess since I don’t always have buttermilk on hand- I will try it adding a couple chipotle peppers to it for my taco salad…. but will also make ‘as is’ for my hubby & daughter who don’t like the ‘heat’.

I think there is something a bit off with the math. If it’s 24 servings then each one would be @ 8.6 calories.

Hi Laura! You’re right! 1 tablespoon of this is equal to 8.6 calories. There are 24 tablespoons in 1 and 1/2 cups (206 calories), so 1 tablespoon is equal to 8.6 calories. It really just depends on how much dressing you want to use. If you use 2 tablespoons per serving, then 1 serving would equal about 17 calories and you’ll only have 12 servings in the recipe. I hope that makes it more clear! πŸ™‚
