Teddy (official name Theodore Charles Debth) is our 70 pound Golden Retriever … We’re obsessed with him.

Before SMTY started, my full time job was training Teddy. We would spendย hoursย every day training together. As incentive to do a good job, Teddy would get dog treats.

During this time, I always wished I could easily easily find healthy, organic, and high-quality dog treats for the Tedster… because he deserves the best.ย SO, I decided to make some of my own.

Full of pumpkin, peanut butter, and just a touch of bacon, this homemade dog treats recipe is super quick and easy to make, totally organic, and can be stored in the fridge/freezer for later.

But most importantly, they’re Teddy approved! Let’s just say, I definitely had another shadow that day.

Ingredients

A simple ingredient list that is packed with wholesome foods and amazing flavors your dog will go crazy for!

  • Pumpkin Puree – easy on the tummy and adds moisture to these bites.
  • Applesauceย – a great dose of fiber, vitamin c, and also adds a ton of moisture!
  • Peanut Butterย – your dogs favorite treat! What pup doesn’t LOVE licking the pb remnants off your finger after opening the jar of peanut butter? (Ahem see photo below for evidence.)
  • Plain Yogurtย – provides a dose of calcium and is loaded with probiotics!
  • Baconย – your dogs second favorite treat! A little salty bacon gives these bites an amazing savory taste and chewy texture.
  • Old-Fashioned Oatsย – a great gluten free grain for pups who are sensitive to wheat! It’s also loaded with vitamin B and omega-6.
Pro tip
Use all organic, all natural, no sugar added ingredients to keep these treats healthier!

How to make

The best part about this recipe? No baking required! Simply, mix, roll, and serve!

  1. Stir together pumpkin, applesauce, peanut butter, and yogurt until well-combined.
  2. Mix in bacon and oats.
  3. Roll into bite-size treats then watch your pup go nuts!
Pro tip
Use a cookie scoop to ensure uniform bites!

Are homemade dog treats good for dogs?

These dog treats are just that…a treat. They’re not a replacement for your dog’s regular food BUT they are healthier than some store-bought treats.

1 treat contains 84 calories, 3 grams of fat, 10 grams of carbs, and 2 grams of protein.

As always, be sure to ask your vet if these would be a good treat for YOUR dog.

What peanut butter to use

Use an all-natural, no salt, no sugar added peanut butter for these treats. Salt and sugar just aren’t necessary to give to your dog. If you want to go the extra mile, use an organic variety. The only ingredient on the peanut butter jar should be “peanuts”.

Whatever kind you use, just make sure you use a peanut butter that does NOT contain xylitol. It’s a sugar replacement that’s safe for people but is poisonous to dogs.

Can you use regular flour?

We wanted to keep these dog treats gluten-free so I made them without flour and used oats instead.

Although flour isn’t necessarily bad for dogs, I don’t recommend substituting flour for oats in this recipe because I don’t know what it will do to the consistency of the treats!

Can you add sugar?

I don’t recommend it. Dogs don’t NEED sugar in their diet, and they’ll love the treats as is! Promise. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Bowl of homemade dog treats

Can people eat these dog treats?

Technically, yes. I took one for the team and gave these a try. Your pup is going to goย crazyย for these, but trust me when I say, these just don’t taste that good to us humans.

If you want a treat too, try this No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Energy Bites Recipe. Then you and your fur baby can enjoy your separate treats…together.

How to store

Store these healthy dog treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days or in the freezer for up to 4 months!

If frozen, just let them thaw before giving them to your dog again.

Can homemade dog treats be frozen?

Yep! These will last in the freezer for up to 4 months. Before serving them to your dog again, just let them thaw in the fridge!

Healthy. Easy. Puppy approved. These Homemade Dog Treats are sure to please!

5 stars I thought these cookies sounded yummy, but I wanted a dry cookie that would last much longer without refrigeration or freezing, so I added about 1/4 cup more oats, ground them into a course flour with a food processor, added an egg and baked them for 18 minutes. Very successful for those who want a baked cookie.

As long as the peanut butter does not contain xylitol. This is very harmful to dogs and if they consume to much it can kill them.

5 stars I made these for an EXTREMELY fussy Golden Retriever with a sensitive stomach, and at first, she turned her nose up at it, so I put it in her food dish and left it for her. After a cautious sniff and a lick, she INHALED It! Iโ€™ve never seen her react to ANYTHING like that before. These DEFINITELY get her approval, which speaks volumes hahaha. I decided to freeze them and chop them into quarters to make them easier to use as a quick reward. SUPER quick and easy to make, the dog LOVES them, I absolutely recommend these!

5 stars My son made these for Miss AnnaBelle the bloodhound’s 7th birthday treat today. She LOVES them! We used Bob’s Redmill quick cook steel cut oats, crunchier texture yet softens in the fridge. For extra bacon flavor, combine the bits of bacon by folding in all ingredients in the cooked bacon greased skillet. We will be making these again! (My son has hand tremors, so these were actually very easy for him to make.)

I’ll adjust for my dog, only occasional peanut butter because of the sugar, and mom’s a vegan, so no bacon. Just a note, for previous dogs,D I’ve used pumpkin & sweet potato, vet directed, for dog’s diahrea.

I just made these treats. I didn’t have plain yogurt or bacon. But I used everything else. I put them in the freezer to form them up for about 45 min. I have s short haired Havanese and a regular. HAVANESE. ONE GOING ON 3 YRS OLD AND THE OTHER JUST ONE YR OLD. THEY BOTH LOVED THEM. I with I would have had more oats on hand to firm them up better. Thanks for the Ted pics. It’s funny I was just thinking of him the other day and have been meaning to ask about him! Happy Birthday, Ted!
