This easy Ham and Cheese Croissant Recipe is made with buttery, flaky croissants, hot and melty cheese, savory ham, and sweet honey mustard sauce!
This ham and cheese croissant recipe is the perfect breakfast or lunch to serve a crowd. Buttery croissants are loaded with ham and cheese, stuffed with honey mustard, and drizzled in a butter sauce — trust me, these will be a hit! Bonus: they’re extremely quick and easy to make!
Ingredients
There are two parts to today’s recipe: the butter sauce and the sandwiches! Both are quick, easy, and delicious.
Butter Sauce
- Unsalted Butter – melted and combined with the other ingredients to be drizzled over the assembled sandwiches. Using unsalted butter allows you to control how much salt goes into the sauce. If you only have salted butter, that will be just fine, although you may need to reduce the amount of additional salt.
- Parmesan Cheese – adds an additional salty, nutty, cheesy flavor to the sauce. Use finely grated parmesan cheese so it incorporates well with the other ingredients.
- Parsley and Basil – fresh herbs give the butter sauce a much needed bright, fresh flavor to balance out the richness from the cheese and butter. I don’t recommend using dried herbs if possible, because it won’t give that same fresh flavor. If you only have dried herbs, you’ll need 1 teaspoon each.
- Garlic – adds a kick of nutty flavor. Use jarred, minced garlic for ease!
- Salt and Pepper – brings out the flavors in the sauce and adds a touch of heat.
Ham and Cheese Croissant
- Croissants – the base for our sandwiches. Use pre-made mini croissants from your grocery store’s bakery to keep things super easy. You can use larger “regular” sized croissants, but you’ll need to amp up the amount of ham, cheese, and honey mustard — I’m guessing at least double the amount of each.
- Honey Mustard – use a store-bought version or whip up a batch of homemade honey mustard. This adds a tangy, sweet flavor and provides moisture to the sandwiches. PSST – serve some on the side as a dip!
- Sliced Ham – thinly sliced ham from your grocery store’s deli with yield the best flavor and texture. If you’re on a budget, use your favorite pre-packaged variety.
- Havarti Cheese and Gouda Cheese – the sweet, creamy, and smoky flavors pair so nicely with the savory ham, but other cheeses such as swiss or cheddar will work as well — use your favorite!
How to make
These semi-homemade sandwiches are absolutely packed with flavor!
Butter Sauce
- Place melted butter, parmesan, parsley, basil, garlic, salt, and pepper into a medium-sized bowl and whisk until combined.
Ham and Cheese Croissant
- Cut each croissant in half then spread each half with 1/2 tablespoon honey mustard.
- Place 2 oz of sliced ham onto each of the bottom halves then top with 1/2 slice havarti and 1/2 slice gouda.
- Top with the top buns then place the sandwiches into a greased baking dish.
- Bake at 350ºF for 30 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the ham is hot then serve and enjoy!
What ham to use
Any sliced, cooked ham will work in these ham and cheese croissants. I prefer thinly sliced ham from the deli, but leftover ham from the holidays will work as well. These sandwiches are delicious with black forest ham, honey ham, smoked ham, country ham, etc. — use your favorite!
What cheese is best with ham?
Cheddar is the classic go-to for a ham and cheese sandwich and for good reason! The sharp flavor of cheddar contrasts nicely with the sweet honey mustard and savory ham. Today’s recipe, however, uses a combination of havarti and gouda which provides a creamy, yet smoky flavor and gooey texture.
Any cheese will go just fine with ham depending on what you’re looking for: a blue cheese would provide a very bold, salty flavor to the dish whereas brie would give an ultra melty texture with slightly earthy flavor.
What to serve with ham and cheese croissants
These ham and cheese croissants are great for breakfast, lunch, or even game day brunch!
How to store
Leftover baked ham and cheese croissants will last in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
To reheat, bake at 350ºF until warmed through.
Can you freeze ham and cheese croissants?
Yes. For best results freeze the croissants before you bake them:
- Assemble the sandwiches as directed but don’t add the butter sauce.
- Wrap each sandwich in foil then place in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months.
- Thaw in the fridge overnight.
- Drizzle with the butter sauce, then bake as directed. The sandwiches will likely need extra time to warm all the way through.
