A light bulb when off, and I thought why not make a new salad dressing recipe for the blog and call it: Greek Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing.

While I DO love my homemade greek yogurt ranch dressing, this homemade blue cheese dressing is giving it a run for its money.

If you love blue cheese, and blue cheese salad dressing in particular, you’re gonna love this healthier greek yogurt version!

This Greek Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing is packed with protein, plenty of blue cheese, and is ultra creamy without all the guilt!

A healthier blue cheese dressing for my salads?

Ummmm yes.

Greek yogurt blue cheese dressing in bottle

Dressing on chunk of iceberg lettuce on plate aboveI feel like blue cheese is one of those you either love it, or you hate it foods.

I personally l.o.v.e. it and so does Trevor. For us, the stinkier the better. One of our favorite snacks is a cheese board with crackers and plenty of blue cheese.

Blue cheese is also one of my very favorite salad ingredients. It just adds the perfect amount of creaminess and tang to really liven up a salad. Yes? Yes.

Lettuce with dressing on plateWell, I was browsing the Internet the other day for some blue cheese salad dressing inspiration, and ohmygosh it can be so full of mayo and sour cream and all things yummy and delicious, but with spring literally staring us in the face, warmer weather = lighter foods.

I decided to completely nix the mayo and base this blue cheese salad dressing off of my favorite greek yogurt ranch dressing and letmetellyou, you’re gonna love it!

Now, before we get into how to make this, let me tell you right now that no, it isn’t QUITE as creamy as your traditional blue cheese dressing. Why? Because we’re not using mayo and we’re not packing it with an insane amount of blue cheese.

While it might not be quite as creamy, I promise it is PLENTY creamy and still completely, perfectly blue cheesy.

Honestly, I think it’s better. 🙂

The best part? It’s SO quick and easy to make. Simply place crumbled blue cheese, buttermilk, greek yogurt, white vinegar, garlic powder, salt, and pepper into a medium sized bowl and stir to combine!

Closeup of lettuce with dressingPlace in the fridge, so the flavors have a chance to meld together, and YOU.ARE.DONE.

This Greek Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing couldn’t be easier or packed with more flavor! It makes about 1 and 1/4 cups, so you’ll be set for a week!

Oh. And I should mention, in the directions 👇, I suggest 1/2 cup – 1 cup of crumbled blue cheese. I like using 1 cup, but some people may not want the dressing to be that blue cheesy.

h.o.w.e.v.e.r.

I think it’s perfect with 1 cup of blue cheese and even with an entire cup, it’s only about 60 calories per serving!

Heck. Yes.

Lettuce with dressing on plate aboveDrizzle this blue cheese dressing over a wedge of ice burg lettuce and sprinkle on some tomatoes, pecans, maybe some bacon, and a little extra blue cheese, and you’ve got yourself an AMAZING lunch or the perfect side dish to your dinner.

Notes

Nutritional information uses the whole 1 cup of blue cheese crumbles and is for 1 tablespoon of prepared dressing.
This definitely gets better as it sits in the fridge.
For a thicker dressing, use less buttermilk or add more greek yogurt.
For a thinner dressing, use a little more buttermilk.

5 stars This is a great option for blue cheese dressing if you are looking for a healthy option for Buffalo wing / celery dip. Buttermilk provides a nice creamy texture and it is easy to thin it out as much as possible. I also recommend buying a good quality blue cheese in a wedge instead of getting crumbles. You can dial in exactly what blue flavor you want, a zingy one or something creamier.

5 stars I’m shocked that this is as good as it turned out. It’s a bit thin but I’m guessing I just didn’t add enough blue cheese. Do you think you could add cottage cheese to thicken it up and add some protein??

5 stars Blue cheese dressing is my absolute favorite, but I avoid it like the plague because of calorie content. Luckily, I had all the ingredients on hand – I just put it in the fridge to let flavors meld, but the little taste I had was incredible. This is a game changer. Thank you so much!

5 stars I didn’t have buttermilk on hand but instead used half and half. I did however, have buttermilk blue cheese! I prefer 2% Greek yogurt for salad dressings as it’s creamier. I do a homemade green goddess using fresh herbs, tarragon and 2%.

5 stars Adding acidity (lemon juice or vinegar) to your dairy will produce a good alternative to store bought buttermilk. Measure 1 TBS of your acid of choice to a measuring cup then fill the remainder with milk or half and half.

What Bleu cheese do you use in this? Bleu cheese is ridiculously high in sodium, like 400g per ounce. How are you getting this to 77mg sodium per tablespoon?

This sounds absolutely delicious! But as a single gal who lives alone, who LOVES food (yeah, I need to lose weight…), I worry that this may go bad before I’d use it all. So question one, is how long does a batch last once made and refrigerated? Second question is, can I freeze it? I often batch cook and freeze things for later. I hate things going to waste, and I don’t want to feel pressured to eat this up faster than what I really want to (I’m heavy enough already) in order to avoid having to throw it out.

5 stars I’ve tried the available blue cheese yogurt dressing at Publix, and didn’t like it at all (the other choices are delicious, like ranch, cilantro). This recipe is perfect! I buy a pint of buttermilk, and the large container of plain yogurt, even though I have no other use for them, because we use this dressing everyday, and we go through it fast.

5 stars Wow, I’m quite impressed with this low fat dressing. I actually made it even lower in fat by using a low fat buttermilk and it still came out amazing!! I only had to use 1/2 cup of blue cheese but if you want a really stinky dressing, you’ll want to use 1 cup. Either way….. it’s really good!!

5 stars Excellent! I could whip this up in 3 minutes with stuff I already had on hand. Used apple cider vinegar in place of white and it worked fine. 1 Cup bleu cheese was wonderful for a burger topping, but my family said it was too strong for the salad. I’m happy with that, as I can stretch my bleu cheese farther by halving it next time. Thanks for a quick, easy, healthy recipe that is bursting with flavor.

5 stars Jennifer, my wife and I lived in Germany for four years, and almost all salad dressings were yogurt and buttermilk based. I really like this recipe with blue cheese. I added a bit more buttermilk to make it thinner (German style) and its just about perfect. We go through this rather quickly. Next batch I will try it with sweet gorgonzola and see what happens Thanks again.

5 stars This was SO GOOD. The amount of garlic was perfect to me, as was the strength of that much cheese, though I guess it would vary from wheel to wheel. I’m going to try it without the buttermilk next time, so it’s more like a spread than a dressing, for use in sandwiches. I bet it would also be amazing with some baked hot wings!

Too much garlic powder, even at 1 teaspoon, but otherwise a great recipe (next time I’ll use 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder) . The salt & pepper rounded out the flavor nicely. I have tried making my own blue cheese dressing in the past, but was always disappointed. Thanks for a great recipe!

5 stars Hi Jennifer! Thanks So much for the recipe! I’m a pretty creative and intuitive Cook on my own, but I haven’t ever had a chance to make my own dressings before! My parents and I LOVE Blue Cheese dressing and never order anything else! Lol My Dad, however has Diabetes and needs to watch the Carbs and calories, but my Mom has had Pancreatitis in the past so she has to watch the Fat! This dressing actually works great with the Fat free Greek yogurt! I just omitted the buttermilk, used a tablespoon of organic Mayo instead and just slightly less Blue Cheese, probably more like 2/3 of a cup! Plus I added a bit of Lemon Zest I had in the freezer that I was saving for stuff like this. They Love it and I can’t believe I actually like it!! I usually don’t like yogurt At all!! Lol I am absolutely going to try making a Version for my ladies lunch with the whole milk organic Greek yogurt!! I imagine totally thick and dreamy creamy, not to mention still very healthy! (Some of us require whole milk fats😉). I will be checking your other great recipes as well. Thanks again for sharing and Blessings to you today! Nancy from the Mid-Atlantic
